Child & Labor Free Rugs

Sales Team - Friday, September 03, 2010

The handmade carpet industry exploits nearly 250,000 children. GoodWeave is helping to combat this problem and transform the handmade rug industry by certifying child-labor-free rugs and by providing education and opportunities to rescued and at-risk children. The GoodWeave program is implemented by GoodWeave International.

This year hiphome luxury rugs became GoodWeave certified.  Here is some information on the GoodWeave program more can be found at www.goodweave.orgThe GoodWeave label is the best assurance that no child labor was used in the making of your rug. In order to earn the GoodWeave label, rug exporters and importers must be licensed under the GoodWeave certification program and sign a legally binding contract to:
  1. Adhere to the no-child-labor standard and not employ any person under age 14
  2. Allow unannounced random inspections by local inspectors
  3. Endeavor to pay fair wages to adult workers
  4. Pay a licensing fee that helps support GoodWeave’s monitoring, inspections and education programs

To ensure compliance, independent GoodWeave inspectors make unannounced inspections of each loom. If inspectors find children working, they offer them the opportunity to go to school instead, and the producers lose their status with GoodWeave. To protect against counterfeit labeling, each label is numbered so its origin can be traced to the loom on which the rug was produced.

GoodWeave also sets contractual standards for companies that import certified rugs. Importers agree to source only from GoodWeave certified exporters in India, Nepal and any other country in which GoodWeave rugs are available.

Importers and exporters also help support the GoodWeave certification program and its commitment to provide rehabilitation and schooling for all rescued children. Exporters pay 0.25 percent of the export value of each rug, and importers pay a licensing fee of 1.75 percent of the shipment value. Licensing fees go toward monitoring, inspections and educational programs that are part of the GoodWeave program.

GoodWeave's certification standards are set by RugMark International, an associate member of the International Social and Environmental Accreditation and Labeling Alliance (ISEAL), which leads the world in setting norms and good practices for certification. RugMark's national offices in producer countries implement and enforce the standards.

In the future, the GoodWeave label will mean even more. In addition to addressing the problem of child labor, GoodWeave's certification standard will include other environmental and social criteria, guided by ISEAL’s Codes of Good Practice. To learn more, visit www.GoodWeave.net.

At the age of five, Manju was already working on the rug looms. While she has since been found and freed from illegal carpet work, some 250,000 children throughout South Asia still toil in obscurity. Through the GoodWeave certification program more than 3,600 kids like Manju have been rescued, rehabilitated and educated, and thousands more deterred from entering the work force.

Futuristic Interiors

Sales Team - Friday, August 27, 2010
We thought these images from http://www.digsdigs.com/futuristic-interior-of-it-entrepreneurs-home-villa-f-by-najjar-najjar/#more-21063 may give you some inspiration.  This residence by Najjar & Najjar is almost futuristic.

A little history from digs digs "This house in Vienna, Austria was built in the early 80ties. It belongs to a young and successful IT entrepreneur that recently commissioned Najjar & Najjar to design the villa’s interior. The owner often works at home and recipes his clients there. He also loves Lamborghini and Macs design styles. That’s why the interior design was made with cutting edge technologies in mind. Walls were break up to create the open space which connects the entrepreneur’s working space with a lounge area, a bar and a kitchen. Many technical devices, such as screens are integrated in the custom furniture popping and turning out just by clicking the mouse of the notebook. Floor, wall and ceiling are unified with the same material, “corian”, a composite of marble powder and fiberglass. A huge aquarium with a delicately generated computer graphic marks a blue contrast in the white. LED lighting and sound systems are controlled from the computer, merging the digital world with the physical interior environment."

Next week there will be more from hiphome rugs.

Carpets & Rugs for healthy living

Carpets for healthy living

Dusting off a myth

In the past, carpet has been unfairly singled out for its alleged association with dust and allergies. However those views are little more than urban myths.

For allergy and asthma suffers, the critical issue is the amount of dust and allergens present in the air they breathe.

A recent study by the German Asthma and Allergy Foundation (ALLERGIE konkret 2/2005) found that wall-to-wall carpet reduces dust in the air to half that found above hard flooring surfaces.

Fine dust concentration

(Ref: German Allergie and Asthma Bund, Media Release 18 June 2005)

The German study backs up the views of Australian respiratory experts Marks & Abramson in their paper ‘House dustmite avoidance: Facts and fiction’ (Asthma Update 2001). Reviewing evidence of the effectiveness of the various dustmite exposure minimisation strategies and clinical evidence, Marks & Abramson conclude that removing carpet has not been demonstrated to reduce overall dustmite allergen exposure in the home and recommend against any drastic and unproven lifestyle modifications such as removing carpet.

It has now been proven that a properly maintained carpet has a positive effect on Indoor Air Quality.

Indoor air quality

Australians typically spend 90% of their time indoors - so indoor air quality is an important factor in protecting health and wellbeing.

The main factors that affect indoor air quality are:

* inadequate ventilation which may occur if heating, ventilating and air-conditioning systems (HVAC) are ineffective,
* chemical contaminants from inside and outside the building -- these include volatile organic compounds (VOCs),
* biological contaminants e.g. bacteria, moulds, pollen.

Many countries have instituted standards and voluntary codes of practice that set guidelines for indoor air quality.
